Record near for Gareth Barry, who did not think he would reach milestone tally

West Brom midfielder Gareth Barry insists he never expected to be a record breaker as he closes in on the Premier League appearance mark.
The 36-year-old will play in his 633rd top-flight game and break Ryan Giggs' record if he features at Arsenal on Monday.
He made his Premier League debut for Aston Villa as a second-half substitute in a 3-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday in May 1998.
Barry joined West Brom from Everton this summer and will get an extension to his initial one-year deal should he make a set number of appearances.
But the midfielder admitted breaking the Premier League appearance record was never a goal.
He said: “I didn't think I'd get here. You make your debut and you're focused on different things. When I hit 500 you're thinking you're coming to the end of your career. I've been able to keep going.
“I've not set any targets and taken it a season at a time. It's a fantastic life I've been living – let's keep it going..

"I've not set any targets and taken it a season at a time. It's a fantastic life I've been living – let's keep it going."

"I want to go as long as possible. Any ex-players and all my family say 'play as long as possible because there'll be plenty of time to sit back and do different things'.

"There's no better feeling than running out there with your team-mates trying to win a game. I'm going to miss that when I do finish so while I still can be involved I'm going to keep going and enjoying it. The desire is still there.

"When I think about my debut to hitting this number everything has gone so quickly in between. I'll be really proud and when I've finished I'll try to take in what's happened in between a bit more."

Barry made 365 appearances for Villa before playing 132 matches in the top flight for Manchester City.

He featured 131 times for Everton and has played four games for West Brom after signing for around £800,000 in the summer. He also won the Premier League with Manchester City in 2012.

However, the former England man – who won 53 caps for his country – will try to forget his landmark when Albion run out at the Emirates on Monday.

"It'll be a nice moment, it'll be in my head but I'll be put to the back of the mind because it's a tough game," he said.

"That number will be an individual thing but football is a team game, no matter what you achieve if you don't get a positive result you're going to be dampened. Anything other than a positive result, there won't be a smile on my face."

Proterra Electric Bus Sets World Record by Traveling 1,100 miles on a Charge

If you still think range anxiety is an insurmountable obstacle for electric vehicles, listen to this: a 40-foot-long electric Proterra electric bus recently drove 1,101.2 miles on a single charge, setting a new world record in the process.
To achieve that feat, Proterra used a completely stock Catalyst E2 Max bus, which boasts a 660-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The bus was driven (without any passengers on board) around the Navistar Proving Grounds in New Carlisle, Indiana. Proterra noted that the previous record of 1,013.76 miles was set by an electric car that weighed about 46 times less than its bus.
Long-distance tests like this are an annual tradition for Proterra, a California-based company that counts BMW and Al Gore among its investors. Last year, one of the company's buses drove 603 miles on a single charge with a 440-kWh battery pack, and in 2015, another bus achieved 258 miles with 257 kWh of battery capacity. Proterra considers these tests important because, it turns out, car buyers aren't the only ones who feel range anxiety.

"Range anxiety exists, even in public transit," Matt Horton, Proterra's chief commercial officer, said. It's one of the main concerns transit agencies have about electric buses, along with reliability and cost, he said. Driving your bus over 1,000 miles on a charge is a good way to alleviate that anxiety.

Granted, driving a bus unloaded on a test track and driving one full of passengers on city streets are two very different things. Horton said a Catalyst E2 Max like the one used in the record run will average around 350 miles of range in real-world use. Proterra estimates that most buses average around 130 miles of driving per day, making that range more than adequate, according to the company. Buses also operate on predictable routes and return to the same garages at the end of the day, so placing charging stations is less complicated than it is for electric cars.

With a range record in the books, Horton said the company will now focus on other areas like cost. While the average cost of Proterra electric buses has dropped from over $1 million to around $700,000, Horton said they are still a bit more expensive than conventional diesel buses. As with manufacturers of electric cars, Proterra will try to emphasize the low maintenance cost of its buses, while also trying to bring purchase prices down further.

Another issue is reliability. Transit agencies keep buses much longer than the average person hangs onto their car, Horton noted, and buses cover more mileage each year than the average passenger car. Some of Proterra's buses have now been on the road for seven years, and the company is working to use data gathered from those vehicles to prove their reliability. But when it comes to range, the company is feeling pretty confident right now, Horton said.

"I think at this point, there's probably not more to prove."

In the business field, the highlight was the 3.95% drop in JBS shares. The meat-packer was affected by the appointment Jos? Batista – Joesley and Wesley's father – to the company's chairmanship. The appointment was questioned by JBS' largest shareholder, the Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

Meanwhile, the locally traded U.S. dollar ended up 0.64%, at R$ 3.1360, reflecting the greenback's appreciation abroad, with investors waiting for the U.S. Federal Reserve's board meeting.

For Tuesday, analysts do not expect data strong enough to lead investors to a profit-taking in the Brazilian stock market, suggesting a new day of records for the Ibovespa.

Energy stocks have also been key to recent earnings growth, although the upbeat figures are coming off low comparisons after 2016's turmoil in the market, according to analysts.

Shares of major lenders, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, climbed over one percent, supported by increasing bond yields.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Sets Steam Record for Peak Player Count; 150,000 Cheaters Removed Since Launch

Since its launch back in March, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been riding a high, breaking a number of new milestones over the past couple of months. After beating non-Valve games in daily playtime hours earlier this month, and briefly stripping Dota 2 of its peak concurrent players record, the game has hit another milestone by reaching the highest peak concurrent player count on Steam ever.
PlayerUnknown's twitter account on Saturday tweeted that the game had 1,342,857 players online at the same time, yet again surpassing games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which recorded 1,295,114 and 854,801 players at the time, respectively. This comes after it was reported last month that the game 877,844 concurrent players on Steam, beating Dota 2.

Earlier this month, Battlegrounds reached another milestone by beating non-Valve games in hours spent daily on Steam. This is largely due to record sales on Steam, selling over 10 million copies since its launch in March. Despite being relatively new, the game has managed to eat away the audience for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which is one of the biggest games on Steam.

A game as big as Battlegrounds would naturally attract some bad seeds and Eurogamer reports that the game has banned over 150,000 cheaters since its launch, out of which 8,000 were banned in a single 24-hour period. This is a substantial jump since last month when Bluehole Creative Director Brendan Greene tweeted that around 50,000 cheaters had been removed.

"If you're caught cheating or using any third-party tool that gives you an advantage we ban you straight away," Greene told Eurogamer. "Permanent ban, no appeal."

Watch Sebastien Loeb’s Record-Breaking Pike’s Peak Hillclimb Car Ride Again

Sebastien Loeb is a racing legend. Not only has he won more World Rally Championships than any other driver (nine of them), he also holds the overall record time up Pike's Peak.
In 2013, Loeb set his record time of 8.13:878 in a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak Special, a screaming all-wheel-drive monster with a 3.2-liter twin-turbo engine producing an amazing 875 horsepower. This car had been on display in Peugeot Sport's museum, but recently the museum sold it into private hands—those of Sebastien Loeb himself.
Loeb promptly brought this car, as well as two of his World Rally Championship cars, to his local Course de Côte de Turckheim, France. Loeb drove each car in several demonstration runs and was not an official competitor. But this was the first time the Pike's Peak car had run at an event in France, giving fans of Loeb and Peugeot the chance to see it on home turf.

Please, Seb. Please bring this car to Mount Washington, N.H. in 2020. As huge a fan as I am of Subaru Rally Team USA's Travis Pastrana and David Higgins, I would love to see you give these guys a run for their money in your Pike's Peak car.

There will be other familiar faces from Pike's Peak there as well. Sure, there's still a dirt section on the Mount Washington Auto Road, but given your WRC record, of course you can handle it. You've already tackled one of the most famous hillclimbs in America. Please come tackle one more.

Meanwhile, let's enjoy these shots from France of Loeb driving these cars as they were designed to be driven.

Watch The Subaru WRX STI’s Full Record-Setting Nurburgring Run

When Subaru released a video to commemorate their Nurburgring lap record for sedans with a specially modified WRX STI, we were impressed, but we still wanted to see the full run. It's not that we don't trust Subaru's word, but it's always educational, as well as entertaining, to see exactly how Subaru did it.
Our wish has now been fulfilled, as Subaru released a video of the full lap Friday morning. The telemetry is not as extensive as Mark Higgins' Isle of Man record, but it still shows the World Rally Championship-bred engine regularly screaming to 8,000 RPM, rapid gear changes through the sequential shifter and more than one visit to speeds of 280 kilometers per hour (170 miles per hour). It's controlled chaos in the cockpit as driver Richie Stanaway pushes the WRX STI Type RA NBR Special to its limits. Yet also calm and collected, which shows in the smoothness of his driving, essential to maintaining control at these speeds.

Yet also calm and collected, which shows in the smoothness of his driving, essential to maintaining control at these speeds.

In addition to the full lap, Subaru also released a video showing behind the scenes of the record attempt. This one-off car was built specifically for the Nurburgring record attempt by Prodrive, who also built Subaru's World Rally Championship winning cars. Prodrive applied a similar formula to the current WRX STI including the same drivetrain, but a suspension specially tuned to the demands of the Nurburgring rather than gravel rally stages.

After testing at Silverstone, Subaru's first visit to the Nurburgring in May was rained out. No records would be set that day, but the team still ran some laps in the rain. They returned in July to sunny and dry conditions and smashed the seven-minute barrier on their first try.

Subaru will also be building 500 road-going examples of the WRX STI Type RA. Improvements over the standard STI include a carbon fiber roof and spoiler, modified suspension, gearing, and a small power bump to 310 horsepower.
